The Fonda Speedway gates will open once again this Saturday to start their 64th season of racing. On tab is the annual Ice Jam 50 for the Modifieds paying $4,000 to win, 25 lap DirtCar 602 Sportsman race, 20 lap Pro Stocks and 15 lap Street Stocks. Stewart Friesen has won the last 2 years, one of five to have multiple opening night wins, Jack Johnson has eight, the late Lou Lazzaro has seven. Friesen is expected to be in attendance in the Halmar International, Parks Comapnies, Jeff Daley and Sons #44 as NASCAR is off this weekend for Easter. Friesen won 4 consecutive track titles from 2012-2015 before going to Halmar and running at Orange County, in which he didn't get his first win at the track until Eastern States. Ronnie Johnson won the 2016 track title after Jeremy Wilder and Bobby Varin both had issues trying to pass RJ for the lead, as both blew tires. Back at it this weekend.
Speaking of RJ, his former developmental drive Connor Cleveland is switching his Friday night track to Airborne, which is going back to dirt for the first time in over 20 years. Cleveland will still run at Fonda as of now and will also run the DirtCar Sportsman Series. Cleveland lost the 2016 Sportsman title at Albany-Saratoga by a point, and a car length to Jeremy Pitts after staing in the back after a heat race crash, after unsuccessfully trying to get someone's car, they quickly went home, got the backup and Cleveland went on a Facebook rant about Chris Johnson when Cleveland was too aggressive on the first lap and ran into Johnson himself. Ironically, Chris' brother Marc went on to win the Modified title that same night by a car length over Brett Hearn. That was not the first time Cleveland has had incidents with fellow competitors as in 2015 he attempted to get by Tim Hartman Jr with 2 to go, he went up, lost control which sent him into the infield, Hatman went on to win as Cleveland wrecked him multiple times on the cool-down lap, he was originally suspended one race but comments towards track officials earned him one more week.
Wehrlein Pulls From F1 Race

It was announced officially yesterday that Pascal Wehrlein has pulled out of the 2nd F1 race of the season this weekend due to lack of fitness again the same reason he missed the season opener in Melbourne. Wehrlein was involved in a crash at the Race of Champions event a few months ago in America and was put in concussion protocol. Sauber's 3rd driver/replacement driver Antonio Giovinazzi will drive the car again in China after making his F1 debut 2 weeks ago, he finished 12th in the event. Little interesting here as Mercedes AMG Petronas boss Toto Wolff praised Wehrlein to come back strong and claimes that he has all the bad luck. Wehrlein was in the running for Mercedes as Nico Rosberg's replacement after the 2016 World Champion suddenly retired 24 hours after winning it. Mercedes claimed Wehrlein needed more experience and could get the car when Valtteri Bottas leaves the team. "That took courage and selflessness, which I know earned him a lot of credit within the team" claimed Wolff but another team boss in a lower series was not impressed saying Wehrlein is selfish for coming out that he is unprepared and it shows how soft he is. Sauber is still unsure about Wehrlein's status after this week.
Mueller Returning To Airborne in 2017

It has been announced yesterday night that Jessey Mueller will be returning to Airborne Motorsports Park in 2017 with his family owned 19. Mueller is a multi-time winner there on the asphalt but the track is going back to dirt for the first time in over 20 years. Mueller will also be returning to Albany-Saratoga Speedway for his 3rd season, the move back to Airborne will mean he will not be competing at Fonda anymore and will only go for Jack Johnson Night and the SDS race (depending on 358 schedule). Mueller will be following the 358 Modified tour as one track is Airborne and he will be running a 358 this season over a Big Block. He will run every race and will try and run every SDS race, but is not a member this season, he was in Florida to run the races there but is expected to be hit-and-miss for some tour races though 358 series doesn't really kick in until August. Mueller, from Olmstedville, NY in his Mueller Family and Sons 19 made his dirt debut at Fonda a few years back and has been running there ever since along with Malta. He is also expected to run a 358 in Malta as they have proved to be stronger with Marc Johnson, a Small-Block, beating Brett Hearn, a Big-Block, by half a car en route to his first ever track title in the Upstate GMC Modifieds. Mueller has not registered a victory on dirt yet and has many torn up cars from multiple flips over the years, including 2 in the span of a week in 2015. There are only a few active drivers who have won at Aiborne the last time they were on dirt, again over 20 years ago.
Brown Seeking Help

This seems to be the story of the week lately as it is revealed that NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Brandon Brown is seeking help ASAP to get to Martinsville for Saturday. Now it's a good thing I run independent so I can write whatever the hell I want, and I'm very upset SunFrog pulled out for Cup. Yeah, it's Cup, but you went to some guy with ZERO experience at any level with a team who again, has no experience. Yeah, BK Racing, big deal, I love Landon Cassill, but I felt bad for him that he ran for them. Now him and former BK teammate David Ragan are on FRR. You guys left an up and comer in Brandon for Gray Gaulding, 5 career races entering yesterday and wow, he destroys the car for the 2nd straight week, congrats. I know they make funny shirt designs so here's an idea, make a design of Gaulding crashing 2 races in a row with your name on it, that'll make you look even more pathetic than you already are with the hate you're getting daily now. Gaulding is an embarrassment and so is the company. If you RT Brandon's tweet and find help for this week, he will put everyone's handle on his car on the rear decklid, every RT counts, help this man, he deserves to be at Martinsville.

PLACERVILLE, CA
The World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Cars will compete in a special mid-week show on Wednesday March 29 when series driver Brad Sweet puts on the Brad Sweet Presents the Placerville Short Track Outlaw Showdown presented by NAPA Auto Parts and Riebes Auto Parts at Placerville Speedway.
During it fans from the Golden State will have a special treat, as Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series point leader Kyle Larson of Elk Grove, CA will be in competition.
Larson is returning to the track that produced his first career sprint car win. “I am excited to race in front of a lot familiar fans at Placerville Speedway and to also get the chance to compete against the best sprint car drivers in the world,” said Larson.
“Last year we had Kyle scheduled to race with us on that Wednesday night but unfortunately he wasn’t able too because of an injury he sustained in the NASCAR series the weekend prior to our event,” said Sweet. “I know how disappointed he was last year in not racing against us but I also know how much he is looking forward to competing at this year’s race.”
Reserved tickets are going fast but fans are still able to purchase their tickets for Brad Sweet’s Placerville Short Track Outlaw Showdown presented by NAPA Auto Parts and Riebes Auto Parts by following this online link at dirtcar.ticketforce.com Reserved tickets are $45 per seat. Fans can purchase pit passes / general admission seating on the day of the event but those seats are all first come first serve. Tickets and will call booth will open at 2 PM. Pit gate opens at 2 PM. Grandstands open at 4 PM with sprint car qualifying slated to begin at 6:30 PM.
An overabundance of sprint car stars will be joining Larson at Brad Sweet’s Placerville Short Track Outlaw Showdown presented by NAPA Auto Parts and Riebes Auto Parts. Leading the charge is Fargo, North Dakota’s Donny Schatz. The eight-time World of Outlaws champion and inaugural winner of the Sweet race at Placerville drives the Tony Stewart Racing/Arctic Cat/Ford Performance/No. 15. Last year’s winner Jason Johnson of Eunice, LA is set to get his Fischer Body Shop/Waco Metal No. 41 back into victory lane to collect the $10,000 payday. Both Schatz and Johnson went on to win sprint car racing’s biggest prize, the Knoxville Nationals, in the same year they won the Placerville Short Track Showdown.
Kasey Kahne Racing teammates Daryn Pittman of Owasso, Oklahoma, driving the Great Clips No. 9 and the event organizer Brad Sweet of Grass Valley, driving the NAPA Auto Parts No. 49 are two of the favorites heading into this race. Other top drivers with the World of Outlaws include Shane Stewart, of Bixby, OK, who drives the Larson/Marks racing No. 2, the Brownsburg Bullet Joey Saldana in the Elk Grove Ford/Roth Investments No. 17 for the newly-formed Stenhouse Jr.-Wood Racing team and another local favorite Paul McMahan of Nashville, TN by way of Elk Grove, CA driving the Destiny Motorsports No. 4.
Sweet has once again booked the popular USAC Western States Midgets as his companion division with the World of Outlaws. “I felt the midgets put on a great show and it gives the fans a nice mix between the winged sprint cars and non-wing midgets,” said Sweet.
On March 29th, it will mark Sweet’s third time being a promoter. His own career started at local tracks like Placerville Speedway. “It feels good to be a part of something local,” said Sweet. “The outpouring of support from the fans, sponsors and teams has been overwhelming.”
Even though Sweet will be wearing the promoter hat don’t forget that he is also a fierce competitor behind the wheel.
Sweet is a 21-time winner in the World of Outlaws Series and earned the Kevin Gobrecht 2014 Rookie of the Year honors. He has won prestigious races such as the Kings Royal at Eldora (2013), the Short Track Nationals (2010) and Belleville Nationals (2008). He also has six career top-10 finishes in the NASCAR XFinity Series driving for JR Motorsports and Turner Motorsports.
The traveling Outlaws will have their hands full with a talented field of local drivers led by Rutherford’s Rico Abreu. The popular Northern California driver has beat the Outlaws before and will get another chance at the Placerville Short Track Showdown. Reigning King of the West champion Kyle Hirst of Paradise is back with Roth Motorsports No. 83. Auburn’s Andy Forsberg is a multi-time champion at Placerville Speedway and will look to put the A & A Stepping Stone No. 92 in victory lane. Campbell’s Bud Kaeding, Hanford’s DJ Netto and Cory Eliason of Kingsburg are other California based driver’s hopeful of beating the World of Outlaws at Brad Sweet’s Placerville Short Track Outlaw Showdown presented by Riebes Auto parts.

Johnson, Genarelli Part Ways

Big development out of Rochester last night as Danny Johnson confirmed he and car owner Chris Genarelli have parted ways out after multiple seasons, leaving Danny without a ride for Friday night's at Freedom and the Super DirtCar Series. Johnson will be behind the Gary Mann Teo for most Short Track Super Series events after Mann broke up with driver Anthony Perrego before The Gobbler at Accord, Johnson drove the car for the event and both worked out a deal to drive for most of the tour this season. Johnson was competing full-time at the Fonda Speedway last year but stopped showing up after his first win of the season, which turned a potential 4 car battle for the championship to 3, between Ronnie Johnson (no relation to Danny), Jeremy Wilder and Bobby Varin. RJ led pretty much the whole race and championship as Wilder had an issue and Johnson accidentally cut Varin's tire when Varin tried to pass him on the bottom. Danny also has no ride for the new King of Dirt Small Block Modified series that is debuting this season, along with the Super DirtCar Series. Genarelli said the two did talk but couldn't reach a deal and decided that they are parting, for now. Yeah, "for now" meaning there could be a chance the two could be together for a race or two later on. Johnson started driving for Genarelli when old owner Mike Payne dropped Johnson for young gun Erick Rudolph from Ransomville. Now the question is, besides STSS, where does the Dr go? Where does he run? Who will he drive for? The Highbank Holdup is less than a month away, if anyone needs a driver, it best be Danny.

What a way to start the first of two Western Swings this year for the World Of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series. The series invaded The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway last night for the first of two nights for NASCAR weekend. FVP returned as the sponsor for the annual FVP Outlaw Showdown at the track where... yep, Donny Schatz won yet again to capture another win. The win came on a last corner battle with Brian Brown. This is Donny's 4th win of the season out of 5 as ironically, the man who upset him at the Knoxville Nationals, Jason Johnson has one win. The 5 time ASCS champion recently entered a partnership with Richard Marshall of Marshall Industries to change the name to Johnson-Marshall Racing. Marshall also sponsors Joey Saldana in the Matt Wood-Ricky Stenhouse Jr Racing 17 car in honor of Bryan Clauson, who passed away in August. Marshall also co-owns Clauson-Marshall Racing and will go for the 2017 USAC title with Tyler Courtney. The team is owned by Bryan's father Tim and they almost won the Chili Bowl Nationals in Tulsa, OK in January.

McLaren Hits 2 More Problems, Alonso Rips Honda

The Formula 1 testing wrapped up in Spain this evening and if one team is thankful for it, it's McLaren Honda. The team was 11th quick in the final day of testing after suffering 2 more faults with the car, that being said, it was 2 electrical problems with Fernando Alonso that caused him to stop both times. His teammate and rookie Stoffel Vandoorne was hit mulile times with this same issue and the team has already changed out 2 engines because of the issue. Yesterday, Alonso ripped Honda as an unreliable engine supplier for McLaren and they are awful. Alonso did not take the vacant Mercedes AMG Petronas seat in the offseason but may next season if Valtteri Bottas does not stay with the team. Now you need to agree with Alonso here, Honda is not the best supplier for F1, especially McLaren who have struggled a lot, including these 2 test weeks where they've been hit with electrical issues 6 times. The team has to depart for Australia soon and have little time to figure it out. They can't go more than 20 laps without running into an issue and they need to realise that F1 races are more than 20 laps, unless if it's a 10-mile track. The team's fastest lap today was also the fastest time of the winter for them.
